5 Ways Cats Show Us How to Handle Coronavirus

Having a little trouble adjusting to the new normal brought about by the coronavirus? For many people, it’s not exactly an easy adjustment to spend our days indoors and away from our usual outdoor activities, friends or even our offices.

In strange times, sometimes it’s the unlikely hero that can rise to the occasion by setting an example we can follow to learn to thrive in our new environment. In this case, that unlikely hero ends up being our cats.

5 Ways Cats Show Us to Adapt During COVID-19

1. THEY WASH THEIR PAWS CONSTANTLY, VIGOROUSLY AND OFTEN.

Cats are obsessively clean and are pro-level at exceeding CDC guidelines when ensuring their mits are thoroughly scrubbed. Licking your hands though…not advised for humans. Instead, opt for a sink, some antibacterial soap and give those babies a good rub-down for at least 20 seconds.

2. THEY HANDLE LONG INDOORS STRETCHES LIKE CHAMPIONS.

Give a cat a 745 square foot apartment and they will make the MOST of it. Houseplants are jungles. The slightest rays of sun are basked in like they’ve found a secluded beach in Fiji. Now, we’re not saying you should curl up in a ball on the floor, but – you should try to find enjoyment in the little things. Maybe try growing your own food indoors or take up yoga during the morning sunrise.

3. THEY HAVE NO PROBLEM LOVING PEOPLE FROM A DISTANCE.

Cats don’t sweat a little social distancing. In fact, our independent little buddies don’t need to be all over you to show the love. A passing glance in a hall can be enough affection, while a violation of the 6-foot rule sometimes results in the reminder, “I’ll let you know when I want to be touched.”It’s only natural that we follow their lead and learn to share our appreciation for others from a distance (or via FaceTime).

4. THEY KNOW HOW TO LISTEN WHEN SOMEONE IS FEELING DOWN.

Making people feel better or less stressed isn’t always about finding the right words. Sometimes you just need to listen…or pretend to listen. Cats are pros at just being there and naturally calming you by being calm themselves! Not only do we need to make our own comfort a priority during this time, but we need to be there for our friends and family too – through wordless support or as a calming presence on the other end of the phone.

5. NAPS. LOTS OF NAPS.

Cats don’t get bored. They get napping—up to 16 hours a day! We know you’ve got kids to teach, 13 video conferences and a buzzing phone. But sometimes it’s healthy to just put everything down and take a nap—even if it’s on that warm, cozy laptop! Your body will thank you for a couple extra minutes of rest and rejuvenation, and it’ll help get you energized and ready to tackle whatever tasks are on your to-do list.

And that’s the story of how cats became the heroes we humans turned to during the coronavirus. One day, we’ll tell future generations about this. Until then, we’ll keep doing our best to live like our favorite fur babies and get the most out of life at home. Turn on our cat music playlist for some added fun.
