Long before they were the stars of our phone’s photo galleries, cats were quite the romantic revolutionaries.

History shows that cats really made the leap in the 18th and 19th centuries. Long relegated to the role of utilitarian pest control, they became the ultimate muses for the Romantic Era, a movement that prioritized emotion, individualism, and the sublime beauty of nature.

While the rest of the world was obsessed with machines and logic, a group of rebel poets and artists looked at their cats and saw something much more profound: a kindred, untameable spirit.

During this period, writers and artists began to see their own “misunderstood” and “independent” souls reflected in the feline spirit.

Famous figures like Lord Byron and Victor Hugo championed cats as intellectual companions. The poet Christopher Smart famously wrote “For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry,” one of the first major English works to treat a cat as a spiritual, divine being.

Additional accounts from the time show cats were also appreciated for their cleanliness — preferred by the likes of famed chemist Louis Pasteur, and adored by Queen Victoria for their companionship. The first National Cat Show was also held around this time by Harrison Weir at the Crystal Palace in London.
