Cats in the Metaverse: The Growing Popularity of Digital Cat Collectibles & More
Love cats? Love digital collectibles? Want to immerse yourself in an augmented reality that allows you to be around felines of all shapes and sizes?
Welcome to cats in the metaverse!
Cats long ago clawed their way to the top of the internet — enjoying a perch that places them among today’s most popular online entertainers. So it should come as no surprise that they are now leading the charge into the new world called the metaverse.
Metaverse you ask? The metaverse is defined as a ”digital reality that combines aspects of social media, online gaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and cryptocurrencies to allow users to interact virtually.”
Imagine watching as a giant virtual kitten gets ahold of a ball of string and dangles it over your head, or picture yourself being the proud owner of some digital cat currency known as NFTs that unlocks a never-before-seen place on the internet.
Today, there is much excitement around the emergence of NFTs (short for “non-fungible tokens), described as “a unique digital asset that represents ownership of real-world items like art, video clips, music, and more.”
NFTs currently changing the way many people look at ownership of art, while also revolutionizing the world of collectibles.
So yeah, it’s a place that is clearly perfect for cats.
Let’s have a look at what else is going on in this new digital world. Brace yourself — because it’s a virtual jungle out there.
The Growing Hobby of Digital Cat Collectibles
Cat-related NFT offerings are becoming hot commodities.
A recent search for “cats” on NFT-Stats, a website that tracks the NFT market and shares data on recent sales, reveals 1,372 results — each worth varying amounts of money.
One of the more high-profile cat NFT collections on the market today is Cool Cats.
What are Cool Cats? Here’s what the company says about them. “Cool Cats are a collection of programmatically random-generated NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. The 1st generation consists of 9,999 randomly assembled Cats from over 300,000 total options. Cool Cats have a variety of outfits, faces, and colors. Each Cool Cat consists of a unique body, hat, face, and outfit — the possibilities are virtually endless! All Cats are cool, but Cats with complete outfits are the coolest.”
Another popular collections includes the Gutter Cat Gang, which include the following back story:
“The year is 2050. Humans are an interplanetary species and have all but abandoned the post-apocalyptic shatters of society on earth. Cats have taken over. One crime-ridden, nondescript inner city is inhabited by a group of cats collectively known as the Gutter Cats.”
And of course there are plenty more cat NFTs such as Cosmic Cats, CryptoKitties, Mutant Cats, Yakuza Cats Society and many, many, many more.
A Virtual World Full of Felines
Also in the metaverse are virtual games created for all types of animal lovers.
Worlds like MetaPets allow you to build your own cat avatar, not to mention design, own, and breed a digital pet. The world gives users the ability to enjoy constant companionship of a cat, without having to worry about allergies, or scooping the litter box.
Whatever your interest is in the digital world, cats are clearly starting to carve out a place in cyberspace.
