Clumping vs. Non-Clumping Cat Litter: Which to Use and Why

There are many kinds of cat litter out there – finding the one that’s best for you can seem daunting. The cat litter aisle is chocked full of bags, boxes and jugs. How do you start narrowing down your options?

There are many factors to take into consideration, like natural vs. clay or scented vs. unscented, but one of the best places to start is to decide whether you want a clumping or non-clumping litter.

WHICH IS BETTER: CLUMPING OR NON-CLUMPING LITTER?

While the answer to this question may depend somewhat on your personal preferences, our team of cat experts concluded that clumping cat litter is vastly superior to non-clumping. We encourage you to opt for a clumping litter for a number of reasons:

1. Easy to Scoop

A quick clumping cat litter makes scooping easier because your cat’s “business” is trapped in firm, tight clumps that are easy to remove.

2. Less Contamination

Non-clumping litters don’t clump around your cats “solids”, so they can get spread around and contaminate the rest of the litter, which isn’t only unsanitary but can also be dangerous as cat poo may carry Toxoplasmosis or other harmful bacteria.

3. No Chiseling

Clumping litters trap liquids before they seep to the bottom of the box. Without clumping, you may need to chisel those liquids out of the box later.

4. Odor Control

Clumping litters trap odor inside the clumps, where non-clumping litters tend to have a harder time keeping odor contained.

5. Healthier Alternatives

Non-clumping litters are often made of clay, which is strip-mined from the earth (which is bad for the environment) and may contain harmful silica dust (which is harmful for you and your cat).
