Dr. Ruth MacPete: "Green Pet Living" - Helping Pet Owners & Pets "Go Green"

You've switched from incandescent bulbs to low wattage LED's. You drive a hybrid and bring your own bags to the grocery store. You care about greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint, but what about your pet's carbon pawprint? Is your pet living a green, eco-friendly life? With just a few simple changes, you can make sure that your pet's living green too.

  • Waste Management. Anyone who has ever had a pet knows that they create lots of waste. It is estimated that 10 million tons of waste from pets fill landfills yearly. What can be done? Instead of using plastic bags to pick up and dispose of your pet's waste, try using recycled biodegradable pet poop bags. If you have a cat, switch from a clay-based litter to a biodegradable litter, like World's Best Cat Litter™. Not only will you be using a chemical-free, all-natural and flushable litter, but by switching to a biodegradable litter, you can cut down on the estimated 2 million tons of clay litter that end up in landfills.
  • Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute. Always pick-up after your pet and follow the backpacker's motto of leaving only footprints. Leaving your pet's waste behind is not only rude, it can pollute water sources when washed into the storm drains that empty into streams and lakes.
  • Buy Green. Purchase pet beds, furniture and toys made from recycled or sustainable materials such as hemp. Environmentally friendly hemp can be used to make almost everything, like leashes, collars, beds and toys.
  • Buy in Bulk. Buying pet food and pet supplies in bulk not only saves money, it also conserves fuel and lowers emissions by saving you extra trips to the store.
  • Pet Overpopulation. Make sure your pet isn't adding to the pet over-population problem by having your pets spayed or neutered.
  • Recycled Pets. If you are thinking about adding to your family think about getting a pet from the shelter. There are tons of "recycled pets" in need of a good home. While adopting one of these deserving pets may not lower emissions or save fuel, it can save a life.

By adopting these tips, you and your pet can live green and make the planet a better place.

Help Give World's Best Cat Litter™ to Cats in Need - Update, January Winners Have Been Picked!

Thanks to everyone for helping to spread the word about this effort! We had 54 suggestions this month, which is great to see such a fantastic increase. Like we promised, we have chosen 5 of those 54 organizations. So let's get right down to it! Here are the winners for January!

  1. Forgotten Animals of Los Angeles (FALA) in Los Angeles, CA
Forgotten Animals of Los Angeles was suggested by an anonymous person who told us that FALA was, "a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to humane nurturing, neutering and finding loving homes for abandoned cats & kittens. Each animal receives a health check, is tested, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and dewormed prior to adoption."

That sounds like a place that may enjoy some free all natural litter. So thank you anonymous for the good tip, we will be sending them some soon.
  2. Tabby's Place in Ringoes, NJ
Tabby's was suggested to us by Danielle, who made it a point to show us that Tabby's place was more of a sanctuary than a shelter. Danielle sent us to their website, while at the same time quoting part of it, "Tabby's Place is a cage-free sanctuary that provides refuge to cats in hopeless situations. Our residents come primarily from public shelters where they had once been scheduled for euthanasia."

Thank you Danielle for pointing out their dedication to helping even the neediest of cats, their litter will be en route shortly.
  3. Feline Rescue in St. Paul, MN
Katie led us to Feline Rescue, a no-kill shelter located in MN, where their mission is clear, "provide safe shelter, veterinary care, and socialization for stray, abandoned, or abused cats until good permanent homes can be found for them."
  4. Marley's Cat Tale in Cary, NC
"Where every tail has a happy ending!" With a slogan like that we feel pretty good about sending them some of our litter. Thank you D. Weaton for helping us.
  5. Red Door Animal Shelter in Chicago, IL
A suggestion by Emily, this is a no-kill shelter that prides themselves on being a safe haven for cats, dogs, and rabbits. We are happy to be shipping them some litter to help them along.

Remember, we will give away two more 34lb. bags to a charity, foundation or rescue group next month too, so stay tuned for updates! For everyone else who submitted a great charity, rescue or organization that didn't get picked, we thank you and invite you to come back next month and try again! Make sure to sign up for Clearing the Air updates via RSS or email so you can know when to make a comment next month.

Brrr! It's Cold - 4 Tips to Keep Your Felines Warm During the Cold Winter Months

Shiver, shiver, shiver ... it's that time of the year again ... when teeth chatter, breath fogs and goose bumps pop. Lucky for us, we can put on an extra coat or go into a warm house. But what about our four-legged friends, who have only one coat to get them through summer and winter? How do we keep them warm?

Here are four easy ways to ensure your pets stay warm during Mother Nature's long dance with Old Man Winter.

  1. Gimme Shelter
You don't have to build a sealed metal fortress for your cat, but let's talk about some sufficient options that don't require a lot of budget and effort. We recommend checking out this very helpful article "How To Keep Outdoor Cats Warm In Winter" on HubPages. Here are some of the key points:
    • Get a shelter big enough for a cat but not big enough for a dog, raccoon, possum, skunk or other unwanted animal.
    • Place some straw in the home for extra warmth.
    • Try to put the shelter in an area protected from the wind and elements. This will help avoid cold drafts.

Here are a few different outdoor shelters and houses that you can purchase for use outside your home. Also keep in mind you can build your own cat shelter.

Small Insulated Outdoor Cedar Cat House from the Cat & Kitten Store -- $159.99
KatKabin Outdoor Cat House -- $103.99
Outdoor Heated Kitty Pad -- $49.95

  2. Feed that Feline!
In winter, it is important to increase your cats food supply and give them a lot of high-quality proteins. This will help them keep their coats healthy and thick throughout the wintertime months. If you make food and water available outside in cold conditions, don't use metal bowls. You don't want Fluffy's tongue frozen to the metal—even if she is triple-dog dared! Also, be sure to regularly check the water bowl to make sure it is not freezing over.
  3. Manage all the ins and outs
This one is pretty simple. When the weather gets cold, let your cat outdoors less. When the temperature starts to bottom out, be aware of how long your cat has been outside. Set a time period from when you let your cat out to when you think they should come back in. For example, if the weather is really cold and you let your cat out at 4, set a timer to let it back in at 4:15.

Unlike in summer, spring and fall, when it is more comfortable for your cat to wait outside, the winter can be a dangerous time to leave a kitty waiting around for you to open the door, which leads us to our next tip.
  4. Watch that door
As you are well aware, if a cat comes up to your door it is ready to come inside. It is very important during the cold winter months to make sure that you pay close attention. Not good at watching the door? Here are two creative ideas to help:
    • Get an outdoor camera. That way you can see if your cat is at your door from the convenience of your computer. We recommend the Logitech Outdoor Camera.
    • Install a motion detector. You can turn on the motion detector every time you let your cats out so that you get alerted as soon as they come back to the door. You can get a fairly inexpensive motion detector like this outdoor motion sensor and set it the appropriate area and height level to detect your cat.

Alright folks, button up and have a happy winter season! For all you cute-as-a-button cats, stay safe ... and stay warm!

Yours purrsonally,

Holiday Hazards

Shorter days and longer nights signal the end of summer and the beginning of autumn and winter. They also signal the beginning of another season: the holiday season. The holidays are filled with trick or treating, turkey dinners, lighting of the Menorah, and Christmas carols. Sadly, for many pets, these joyful times are interrupted by an unexpected visit to the veterinarian. While the holidays are festive times, they can also be perilous times for our pets. Each year, millions of pets are seriously injured during the holidays, with intestinal obstructions, chocolate toxicity, burns, and pancreatitis being some of the most common reasons. In order to ensure that your holidays are filled with visions of sugarplums, rather than long waits in a veterinary emergency room, follow these simple precautions to help keep your pets safe.

Holiday Decorations
Pets are inquisitive by nature but their curiosity can get them into trouble. While a Christmas tree adorned with glistening ornaments and twinkling lights may be a feast for our eyes, we would never think of putting one of those shining ornaments in our mouths. However, to our pets these twinkling objects are new toys beckoning to be examined, played with, and even eaten. Shattered glass ornaments are razor sharp and can injure pets and their people. Most of us know that small ornaments can be choking hazards, but many are unaware of the dangers of linear objects, like tinsel, string, yarn, and ribbons. Not only can pets become entangled, if ingested, linear objects can also cause life-threatening intestinal blockages unless they are promptly removed surgically. Linear foreign bodies are especially common with cats.

Candles
Decorative candles, jack o' lanterns, and Menorahs can also be very tempting to our pets. Besides possibly burning an overly curious or careless pet, they can start a house fire if accidentally knocked over. Never leave lit candles unattended and always place them out of reach of pets.

Plants
Although they may seem harmless, certain holiday plants, like lilies, ivy, holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias can be dangerous if ingested. The symptoms can be as mild as vomiting and diarrhea or as serious as kidney failure and death. Lilies in particular are highly toxic to cats causing kidney failure and death. When decorating your home for the holidays try to use non-toxic plants or keep poisonous plants well out of reach of pets.

Food
Calorie-filled holiday feasts and Halloween sweets can hurt our waistlines by packing on a few extra pounds. For our pets, holiday foods can have even more serious health consequences than weight gain. Although in keeping with the holiday spirit of goodwill, sharing our leftovers with our pets can lead to pet obesity. Pet obesity is associated with significant health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. Giving leftovers routinely also promotes begging and reinforces bad behavior.

Besides leading to obesity, eating fatty holiday foods can also cause a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas gland called pancreatitis. In pets, pancreatitis is usually caused by ingestion of fatty foods like turkey, ham, gravy, and chicken skins. If left untreated, it can be fatal. Bones also pose a serious danger to pets. Poultry bones are dangerous because they can splinter and get lodged in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore should never be given to pets. Ham and beef bones can break teeth or can also cause intestinal obstructions. If you wish to give your pet a special holiday treat, instead of giving them bones, consider giving them a healthy dental treat specially intended for safe chewing and dental hygiene. Never give your pets chocolate. Fortunately, most people know that chocolate can be toxic to pets. Even small quantities can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and even death, so keep chocolate out of their reach.

Lost Pets
Although the holidays are usually joyous times, as anyone who has ever hosted a holiday party knows, they can also be stressful times. This can be especially true for our pets. The revolving door of visiting guests, the break from the routine, the raucous trick-or-treaters, and the merry carolers can frighten our pets and cause them to run away. If your pet tends to easily get scared, nervous, or becomes protective, it is important to keep them confined safely inside your house. Many pets are lost during the holidays when they jump out of their yard or dart out of an open door. Sadly, there is also a disturbing increase in the disappearance of many animals, especially black cats, during Halloween. Keep your pets indoors so that they do not fall prey to pranksters. Remember all pets, even strictly indoor cats, should have collars with tags and microchips so that if they become lost they can be returned safely home.

Keep these important tips in mind during the holidays in order to keep your pets safe. Watch out for choking and obstruction hazards. Avoid pet-toxic plants or, at least, be sure to keep them out of reach of your pets. Don't give them chocolate, alcohol, or bones. Instead of giving your pet leftovers from your holiday meal, give your pet a pet-safe treat or a new toy. Lastly, keep pets inside and away from open doors during the holiday commotion to prevent them from running away. Paying careful attention to these warnings will help keep the holidays happy for you and your pet and should prevent unscheduled visits to the vet.

How green is your world?

For some of us, the inconvenient truth is this: when it comes to "greening" our home, our lifestyle, our family and our pets, we are not always sure where to begin. Here are some easy-to-embrace, eco-friendly tips. Try some. Try them all. We and the planet may be better for it.

  • One coffee cup? Two cereal bowls? Don't put the dishwasher to work. Rinse and air dry. Run the energy-sapping dishwasher only when it's full and on its energy-saver mode.

  • Take shorter showers and consider the bath a special treat. Hot water heaters are a major energy drain. Insulate your water heater. And, install low-flow shower heads: you'll cut your water usage and water heating costs.

  • Use more energy-efficient lighting throughout your home. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have
come a long way and are often 10 times more efficient than compact fluorescents.

  • Choose pet products and pet health care providers who share your concern for the natural world. For example, World's Best Cat Litter™ is made from all-natural ingredients with no added chemicals or perfumes, so it is totally safe for cats and the whole family. The chemical-free litter is especially suitable for people and pets with allergies and chemical sensitivities because it is silica dust-free. Also, the product is safe if ingested by pets or humans because it contains no toxins.

  • Close down your computer at night. Hitting the off button is worth an average of $90 of electricity a year. The Department of Energy recommends shutting off your monitor if you aren't going to use it for more than 20 minutes, and the whole system if you'll be off line for more than two hours.

  • One day each week, leave the car in the garage all day.

  • Our parents were on to something, when leaving a room, turn out the lights!

  • Drip. Drip. Drip. A leaky faucet can lose up to 20 gallons of water a day. A leaky toilet can flush an extra 200 gallons every day! Put half dozen drops of food coloring in the tank. Wait ten minutes. If you then find color in the bowl, you've got a leaker.

  • Planning to build a new home or add on to your existing residence? Locate contractors who participate in green building programs.

  • Take a cue from our grandparents. Use natural resources to clean. Lemon juice and vinegar were powerful tools in the past!

  • Get out the caulking gun and weather strip your home.

  • Walk, bike or car pool whenever possible. You'll save energy and burn a few extra calories!
