Become A Fresh Air Fiend–In The Home

by Family Lifestyle Expert Lynn O’Rourke Hayes

The smell of fresh air in your home!

Fresh air. There’s nothing like it. Rather than put artificial air fresheners to work in your home, choose natural or organic elements to keep your home smelling sweet and clean. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Out with the bad. In with the good. Remove items like old food and smelly socks as quickly as possible. Then bring the good air in. It may seem obvious, but weather and outdoor air quality permitting, open the windows wide and let the fresh air flow through your home whenever possible.

Flower power. Fresh flowers add color, beauty and sweet smells to the home. Whether cut or potted, blossoms like daisies, roses or stock add a pleasant fragrance to every room in your home. Note–be sure to check out the safe-list of flowers and pets to bring in your home. Here are a couple lists for reference http://www.catscans.com/plants.htm , http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/?plant_toxicity=toxic-to-cats .

Baking Soda. Your grandmother probably s

hared the many benefits of using baking soda in your home. Store an open box in your refrigerator. Tuck a small bowl of the powerful powder in bathrooms, closets or in storage rooms. Sprinkle on carpets, wait ten minutes and then vacuum odors away.

Manage Pet Odors. Your four- legged family members can be responsible for bringing interesting odors into the home. Keep your home clean and your pets healthy using all natural products whenever possible. Cat litters, like World’s Best Cat Litter™, use all-natural ingredients like whole-kernel corn and provide all-important odor control and easy clean-up.

Stove top fragrance. Put lemons, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to work by simmering them on the stove, creating a warm fragrance particularly appealing in winter months.

Lovely lemons. Toss lemons into your garbage disposal to remove unfriendly fragrances from your kitchen.

House Plants Help. Potted houseplants like ferns, spider plants and lady palms take volatile organic compounds found in paint and plastics as well as carbon dioxide out of the air. Plants also release humidity and oxygen into your home and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that might otherwise escape into the outside air. And of course, they add a rich green backdrop for your other possessions.

Essential Oils. Tuck lavender soaked cotton balls into your drawers. Spritz a mix of water and lemon oil throughout your home. Just a few drops of these sweet smelling oils can be added to organic potpourri or a hot bath to soothe the senses.

Baker’s delight. Who doesn’t love the sweet smell of cookies baking in the kitchen? Added bonus: the whole family can enjoy the warm treats when they emerge from the oven.

We Tawt We Taw a Puddy Tat—a Salute to Cartoon Cats

Thirty-two years ago this past June, Garfield debuted in the comic strips. Today, Jim Davis’ creation is
the world’s most syndicated* comic strip, proving that everyone loves a good dose of daily feline
funnies.

These days, the newspapers feature a clowning clowder of cartoon cats—from leading characters such as Garfield, Heathcliff and Mooch (Mutts) to sensational supporting roles such as Nermal, Chubby Huggs (Get Fuzzy), Peekaboo (A Rose is a Rose) and Shtinky Puddin’ (Mutts).

And Heavens to Murgatroyd, we haven’t even mentioned the great cartoon cats of television and silver screen! Snagglepuss may be a pink mountain lion, but with the dapper collar and cuffs, we figure he’s pretty domesticated. But disqualifying the big cats like Snagglepuss, The Pink Panther and the stuffed tiger Hobbes, we wonder what funnies you fancy.
Here are 10 famous cartoon cats. Which one gets fans of World’s Best Cat Litter™ animated?

Did we leave out your favorite? Drop in with your suggestion—just not off a cliff, please.

M-m-m-me-me-meow for now, folks!

The Pitter Patter of Little Pads… and Big Hearts

Just a reminder that June is the American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Cat-Month®.  If you don’t have a cat, what’s the matter with you? (And why are you reading this blog?)

But here’s something we can do to help out

In celebration of American Humane’s Adopt-A-Cat Month®, songwriter Mary Ann Kennedy and CD Baby will donate 50% of the proceeds from June sales of the Who Saved Who CD to American Humane.

Check out the video featuring the title song and photos of shelter cats—and order your CD at www.maryannkennedy.com!

And, together, we can help spread the word about the great job animal shelters do every day. Join us on Facebook and send us a picture of your adopted cat and let us know where you found him or her. If we get enough photos, we can start a “family album” of sorts and brag about our cats and the great people who helped us connect with them.

Meow for now.

Pounds for Pounds – The World’s Best Cat Litter Charity™

Calling all “feline”thropists!

World’s Best Cat Litter™ has launched a new charity that will donate much-needed cat litter to animal shelters. And all you have to do is vote!

Using Facebook, fans of World’s Best Cat Litter™ can vote daily to donate pounds of litter to shelters and organizations devoted to helping our cat communities.

For the next 45 days, visit our Facebook page and vote for one of these three deserving organizations:

The Washington Animal Rescue League

The Washington Humane Society

Alley Cat Allies in partnership with Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter

Vote early and vote often. (You can vote once daily.) Once you become a fan, we’ll donate a tenth of a pound of World’s Best Cat Litter™ for every vote you register. At the end of the voting period, the litter will be distributed proportionally to the total vote count.

Not a fan yet? Become a fan and we’ll donate a whole pound. In fact, we already added a pound for every current fan. That is nearly 2,000 pounds of pet-safe, all-natural litter.

And tell your friends. To make this a true success for these fine organizations, we need the help of the World’s Best Cat Litter™ faithful to recruit voting and doting fans. The more people you can get to become a fan, the more pounds of cat litter we will donate.

In other words, if you take care of the many, the pounds will take care of themselves!

Vote for change (of litter).

Flea season … and other things that make you scratch your head.

Flea season for catsBe vewy vewy quiet. … We’re hunting fleas. That’s right, fellow Elmer Fudds, with the warmer weather and open windows, we’re reminded that it’s once again flea season, which—depending on where you live—can last from early spring to December.

Consult with your veterinarian for the best way to control fleas for your cat and your environment. But the best way to control fleas is to prevent them. And the best way to prevent fleas is pure diligence:

  • Vacuum carpets, rugs, drapes and upholstered furniture often
  • Mow the lawn regularly; fleas and ticks love high grass
  • Spend some quality time and groom your cat routinely
  • And if you find fleas, give kitty a soapy bath (no matter how much she protests) and remove fleas with a fine-toothed metal comb

There is plenty of advice on the web about natural flea control—from serving your cat a bit of brewer’s yeast to making your own herbal flea collars … from scratch!

And certainly, there are many chemical solutions, such as pesticide-based flea collars. But we have to wonder about flea collars that include “NOT FOR USE ON HUMANS” warnings on the packaging, which is most of them. If they aren’t safe enough to wear as a “Live Flea Free” bracelet, are they really safe for our whiskered wee ones?

But maybe those warning are there simply because the thought of us wearing flea collars as bracelets offends our cats’ sense of feline fashion. After all, a tabby doesn’t look too shabby in a hat. … And we hear a cat’s pajamas are, well, the cat’s meow.

But before we slide into a whole new digression of cats in clothes, we’ll leave you with what may be the cutest thing you’ll see all day: kittens on a slide.

Meow for now,

Happy National Pet Week!

Time flies fast and furry-ously when you’re having fun. So don’t let National Pet Week go by without a little extra celebration. Break out the ‘nip. Break in a new scratching post. Brake for squirrels. And do your part to keep all pets and animals safe and healthy.

National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine.

The theme for 2010 is “Pets and People—Healthy Together,” encouraging exercise for people and pets alike. (Did you know that 57% of cats in the United States are overweight, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention?)

So how do you get a cat to exercise more than her right to sleep? Vetinfo.com has some good tips.

And, as always, share your secrets right here. We love hearing from you any week of the year!

Step up and green it up for Earth Day – Top Ways to Celebrate Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary

Greetings and greenings to everyone,

Humans, pets, plants and all walks of life are as different as the seasons. However, as unique and different as we all might be, we share one giant think in common-the planet! That said, wouldn’t it be a good idea for all of us to give a special thank you to the wonderful round ball beneath all of our feet?

We at World’s Best Cat Litter™ are pumped for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2010! In prep for this historic event, we wanted to share some fun ways to celebrate this special occasion! From clothing, to household products there are countless ways to lead a sustainable life in the twenty-first century. Here a just a few among many!

Toys:
There are many different products created and designed with the intentions of keeping your pets green! Here are a few of our favorite:

How many of your cat’s toys are actually “green” and earth-friendly? Maybe you should consider buying your cats a Chase The Hemp Cat Tail … for play time purposes of course!

Does your cat have an Itch? A bamboo square with Mohair green or brown, the perfectly green pet scratcher.

How about Wooly Dust Bunnies? These unique, organic dust bunnies are perfect for chasing!

Tips:
If you aren’t looking to spoil your pet with anymore organic or natural toys this time of year, there are tons of ways to make sure you and your pets stay eco-friendly!

1. Adopt. Sometimes pet ownership goes through cycles-it is always great when ownership gets recycled back to great and loving pet owners. Why spend the money and time buying a new pet when you can adopt one of the thousands of pets that will be living in shelters this year.

2. Clean up the mess. It is not the most glorious part of being a pet owner, but if you are going to do it right, make sure you pick up your pets waste. Use a biodegradable bag instead of plastic or create a compost pile if you can!

3. Pay attention to what you are feeding your pet! There are many 100% organic pet foods available these days, give them a try!

4. Lend a hand! Not just for Earth Day, but every day you should be looking to pick up rubbish those less considerate pollute the ground with. However, if the weather is nice this coming Earth Day, get outside, bring your pet and do a little cleaning up!

Finally, check out this list of the “Best Sustainable Items for Earth Day 40th Anniversary.”

Do you have great Earth Day tip to share? What are you doing to celebrate the Earth Day 40th Anniversary with your pet? Let us know by posting a comment below!

So cheers to keeping the earth healthy and clean! For all our customers out there thanks for celebrating earth day year round through purchases of World’s Best Cat Litter™!

A big green thumbs up,
– World’s Best Cat Litter™
